PRO/ADVANCED WINNER: Alyssa Rose

WHY IT WON:

The minute you view this piece, clearly, it is something special. If you have seen Alyssa's other art posted here, then you know how creative she is with her entries, but we felt that this went above and beyond! First of all, the Asian theme is brilliant and we love the layers of details from the subtle decorative background, to the ornate gold plate. You were able to incorporate this style even when it came to the fish. It almost has a statuesque feel to it and the colors really pop out, without going overboard. One critique would be that in a few areas it does seem to get a little muddy, but I know this is artwork I would love to have hanging in my home!

 STUDENT/BEGINNER WINNER: John Jakubowski

WHY IT WON:

We selected this piece as the winner of our Student/Beginner category because first we loved the wet 3D feel this fish has, its as if you could feel it in your hand. The use of color and detail is outstanding and the face is very attractive ... for a fish. I think everyone who started this challenge was surprised at the level of complexity for a single subject, seemingly mono-color, piece and John really nailed the fins and scales! One of the areas that could be improved would be to clean up your edges more where the dark background meets the fins. Perhaps a very sharp / hard-lead pencil like a Prismacolor Verithin could help do the job. Overall, very impressive piece and we could look at it for hours.
