ADVANCED WINNER - Janna Voss

WHY IT WON: What a great, original composition that you chose! Each element is rendered beautifully and with your limited palate of browns, reds and blues it creates a great retro tone to the whole piece. There are so many textures and the viewer can really feel each one from the fray of the book to the metals and wood. The highlight of the piece would have to be the screwdriver – it really just pops off the page! It must have been such a challenge to create 3 additional artworks when doing the photos but you executed it stunningly. My only critique would be to maybe use a slight more contrast, although I am so glad that you avoided blacks in this one. Bravo!

BEGINNER WINNER - Fae Thomas

WHY IT WON: First I have to say I love that you write that although you had hesitations to even do this challenge, you had so much fun that you did a second piece – THIS winning piece! So glad you did too, the colors are wonderful and all your effort has paid off in all the details. The areas that I think stand out the most is the box (the shine and 3 dimensional qualities give the whole artwork great depth), I also love the rusty wrench, keys, and pocket knife – all translate it’s own texture convincingly. Thank you for your hard work this month and hope to see more in challenges to come!

  1. The "download" link doesn't appear to be working...it takes me back to flickr instead of the option of downing loading as small, medium, large, etc....or maybe it's just me....thanks!

    1. Tess Lee, I'm not sure why that is happening but new this month you can download this zipped folder containing not only the full size image but a close up of some of the items in the photo!

  2. Hello,
I am a graphite pencil artist and am very slow at finishing pieces and would come nowhere near the deadline for these challenges. So, I was wondering ... since they are copyright released ... would it be at all possible for me to download these challenge photos and draw them at my own pace and when finished add them to my website and/or art shows here in my area? Or are they just released for the challenges only? If so, I understand completely about the copyright issue. Thanks in advance,
    Terri

    1. Terri,

Thank you for your interest in the Art Challenges - I understand that if you took on the whole image it would be very daunting - especially on this piece to finish in time. We sometimes try to give you a busy piece so that you can find your own composition and crop it down to your favorite areas.

To answer your question - YES! Please take all the time you need and use these copyright free images to our readers. You can use your final piece to compete (as competition rules allow) and even sell! Thank you for asking and best to you.

BTW We hope that no matter how long it takes to complete that you upload to the Flickr board so we can all enjoy your artwork!
