PRO/ADVANCED WINNER - Angela Ali
WHY IT WON:
It’s all in the details. There were other entries that were very competitive with this piece but it really came down to the details. First let me acknowledge how SPOT ON this is to the original – but better. I can’t say enough about the skin tone, highlights, color choices and mad rendering abilities! The details that pushed this over the edge was really 1. the veil – this was one of those things that many people were probably surprised to be a point of struggle and even as you said, you had to put a concerted effort into making this look right. Who would think that something so unassuming would be such a fantastic area in the art. 2. The jewelry – the metal looks like metal and you really pulled off the bokeh in the far left pieces. 3. The hair – more specifically ... the hair on her shoulder just adds a level a realism that is really hard to do with colored pencils as typically it is a one-shot deal, unlike with digital or some paint mediums. So glad you participated and thrilled to have the level of talent in this art competition!

STUDENT/BEGINNER WINNER - Jessica Padua Lingle
WHY IT WON:
Our top criteria when judging is always skill. You executed this wonderfully and really captured the essence of the photo. We loved your color palette and the use of color over the whole image. The details are striking on her eyelashes and browse as well as the hair but I think it is the eyes that really make this piece a stand out. The close-up crop really shows this off and although the other entry you submitted, with the whole image in view is lovely and definitely shows you did the work, the tighter composition just worked a little better for your areas of strength. We also wanted to acknowledge that, although it didn’t sway our decision, we appreciated your multiple attempts to get this piece just right and feel that your efforts paid off in the end and are especially impressed that this is a first colored pencil portrait for you. Thank you for your submission, we look forward to seeing more!
