ADVANCED WINNER - Sung Choi

WHY IT WON:
Wow, this is just stunning and really is a testament to what colored
pencils are capable of. Your textures are really outstanding, from the wood, to
the pulp, to the glass, and even the terry cloth towel. You can practically
taste the juice! Other areas of note is how you handled the reflections on the
knife and plate. Your subtle shadows really pull the items off the paper and
lend a depth that creates a remarkable effect for the viewer. Lastly, I have to
mention how amazed we were that you even get the moisture on the cutting board
spot on. The only “weak” area I could find would be perhaps in the wood grain of
the cutting board towards the back – and that is only because I am looking for
something to tell me that this is a drawing! Thank you for your submission, what
a pleasure to view this fabulous piece!
BEGINNER WINNER - Amis
WHY IT WON:
I love the tone of this piece first of all, it has a quality that lets you
know right off the bat that this is no photograph – although it has the realism
of one. The detail across the whole work is stunning but I have to say my
favorite part isn’t the fruit but the additions – the plate, knife and glass –
that made all the difference! One area that could be improved upon would be the
towel – I know this was a struggle for many but lacked the same believability as
the rest of the elements. Fantastic job and I hope to see more . . . perhaps in
the Advanced category next time!

I suspect that a name is exchanged at the winner (beginner)
ReplyDeleteOh well the photo had been changed. Okay, now!
DeleteI have seen in the few months that I have observed drawings submitted and chosen for the monthly challenges, or those posted to the FB site after submission as well, that Color Pencil Magazine does have a preference realism. The more detailed the better it seems.
ReplyDeleteJUDGING: Judging is done by the staff of COLORED PENCIL Magazine. What we are looking for first and foremost are straight-up skills. Although we love many styles of art, for this purpose of this particular contest we are looking for realism to determine your skills in colored pencils medium. Other criteria that we take into consideration is, composition, creativity, and use of medium - including color palate, texture and technique.
